| Tips on attending a career fair: |
| |
• |
Dress as if you are going on an interview. (You very well may be and could be hired on the spot) |
|
• |
Take plenty of resumes with you. (Ensure that your resume is well written and sells your skills and attributes) |
|
• |
Practice interviewing and networking skills long before you go. (Successful sales people study their market, practice their pitch, learn their product inside and out and all of this results in closing the sale; learn and use the same technique) |
|
• |
Carry a portfolio with a note pad and pen. (This will give you a place to put business cards, your pen, resumes so that they do not get crushed and you will be an impression of preparedness). |
|
• |
Meet at least 8 recruiters. (This will give you practice in talking about yourself and what your goals are. This is a confidence builder and helps build your knowledge on basic questions an employer may ask). |
|
• |
Know who you are and what you want and write it down in your portfolio. (What do you want to be doing in the next five years, what are your greatest strengths, what areas do you need to improve on, what have you been doing in past years, what are you looking for in an employer). |
|
• |
Stay focused on the employers needs. An employer's needs must be met before your needs can be met, such as: Well groomed, dependable, reliable, result oriented, hard working employees. (Employers are not interested at the time of introduction that you can play banjo while standing on your head, however once you are hired it may be a great and interesting topic while standing at the coffee machine on your one year anniversary). |
|
• |
Expect the unexpected. Employers talk to hundreds of people all year round. Some employers are well trained and others are not. Don't let a poor interviewer compromise your strength in an interview. (Stay on course, remember a successful sales person has built confidence from practice, knowledge and experience). |
